INS Vikrant, with a displacement of 42,800 tonnes, is powered by four General Electric engines and can carry an air wing of 30 helicopters, fighters, and UAVs.
The keel was laid in 2009 and was launched in water in 2013. “Using a novel aircraft-operation mode known as Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR), the IAC is equipped with a ski-jump for launching aircraft, and a set of three ‘arrester wires’ for their recovery onboard.
INS Vikrant will be country's first indigenously-built aircraft carrier.
It has 2200 compartments including separate accommodation for women officers and female Agniveer sailors.
The equipment has been made in 18 states and union territories including places like Ambala, Daman, Kolkata, Jalandhar, Kota, Pune and New Delhi.
The entire cabling of INS Vikrant around 2,500 kms in length has been made in India.
Warship-grade steel has also been made in India with the help of Indian Navy, DRDO & SAIL. It can be later exported to other countries.
It has been designed for operating the MiG-29K but the Indian Navy would be ultimately deploying the indigenous TEDBF fighter aircraft for which it has been working with DRDO.
