World Hearing Day (WHD) Observed on March 3, 2017
The World Hearing Day (WHD) is observed every year on March 3 to raise awareness and promote ear and hearing care across the world. The 2017 theme “Action for hearing loss: make a sound investment” draws attention to the economic impact of hearing loss and the cost effectiveness of interventions to address it.
World Wildlife Day (WWD) Observed on March 3, 2017
The World Wildlife Day is observed on 3rd March every year to celebrate and raise awareness about the world’s wild fauna and flora. It is celebrated to mark the signing of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) on this day in 1973. Significance of Day: It aims to create awareness and encourages people across the globe to protect endangered species. It also calls for taking up urgent steps to fight wildlife crime which has wide-ranging environmental, economic and social impacts.
2017 theme: “Listen to the Young Voices”. It aims to empower and engage the youth in conservation issues. Engaging and empowering youth is the call of this year.
Harika Dronavalli Wins Bronze Medal at the 2017 Women’s World Chess Championship in Tehran
Indian grandmaster Harika Dronavalli has won a bronze medal at the 2017 Women’s World Chess Championship in Tehran. This is Harika’s 3rd bronze medal at the World Championship level. The first two were in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2012 and Sochi in 2015. Harika has won the World Juniors in 2008, Commonwealth women’s title in 2010, Asian Championship in 2011 as well as World Online Blitz Championship in 2015. She received the Arjuna Award in 2008.
Weapon-Locating Radar SWATHI handed to Army
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) formally handed over an indigenously developed Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) system dubbed as ‘SWATHI’ to Indian Army. The DRDO also handed over a Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) recce vehicle Mk-I and NBC treatment drugs to the Indian Army.
Union Government approves over 4,000 PG seats in medical colleges & hospitals
Union Government has approved over 4,000 Post Graduate seats in medical colleges and hospitals across the country for the academic session 2017-18. Health Minister J P Nadda said that with this, the total number of PG seats available in the country will go up to over 35 thousand.
SC appointed SIT detects 70 Thousand Crore Rupees Black Money
Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigating Team (SIT) on black money has so far unearthed black money to the tune of 70 thousand crore rupees across the country. The committee will submit its sixth report to the Apex court in the first week of April. Black Money Panel Member Justice Arijit Pasayat said, that on the SIT’s recommendation, the Government has already declared that cash transaction beyond Rs 3 lakh is to be treated as illegal and punishable. The meeting assumes significance as it was held for the first time after demonetisation undertaken by the Union government.
International Conference ICEGOV2017 to take place in New Delhi
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in collaboration with United Nations University and UNESCO, is organizing a three-day International Conference ICEGOV 2017 in New Delhi from 7th to 9th March.
WCD to set up "Women’s Entrepreneurship Council"
The Ministry of Women and Child Development has proposed the setting up of a Women’s Entrepreneurship Council for taking up with the government the problems faced by business women. The Council, modelled on the lines of chambers of commerce, will seek to resolve issues through policy changes.
ISSF World Cup: India's Jitu Rai wins gold in 50m free pistol
Indian shooter Jitu Rai continued his dream run in the ongoing ISSF World Cup as he clinched a gold medal in 50 metre air pistol event. Jitu created a new world record with 230.1 points in final.Another shooter of Indian team Amanpreet Singh won a silver medal in the same event. India have now three medals in the tournament. Jitu Rai had on Tuesday won a Bronze medal in 10m air pistol event of ISSF World Cup. Earlier, Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai clinched the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event at the event. The Indian duo won the first-ever medal in the discipline by beating Japan in the finals at the Karni Singh Shooting Range.
