World Food Day October 16
World Food Day
- World Food Day is Observed in October 16, 2016. The day marks the foundation of Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945. In 1979 for the first time it was observed as a Day for action against hunger.
Global Hunger Index
- Fifty lakhs children die from malnutrition every year across the globe. The global hunger rate now stands at 1 in 9 people which is the lowest level in recorded human history. Global Hunger Index report has placed India at 97th position among 118 developing nations. Particularly, in developing countries, death and permanent disability from hunger occur all too often, especially in vulnerable groups such as women of child bearing age and young children. One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security.
- And these are the reasons that over 190 countries at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September last year pledged to end hunger in the next 15 years. The global message for this year World Food Day becomes “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.” As World's leading nations including India ratify Paris agreement to combat the climate change, our collective task is now to turn commitments into action on the ground.
